The Span of the ‘Mid Century’

Since so many of the side projects that I am likely to touch on here relate in some way to what is often referred to as the “Mid Century” (20th century, just in case), I thought I should put a couple of bookends on the shelf to help define the time period in question, at least as far as my interests are concerned.

A good case can be made for the “mid century” portion of the 1900s being the full run of years from just after World War II to right when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon. And I’m sure I will sometimes highlight things that fall somewhere in that wider range. But for the purposes of these types of posts, I tend to compress that a bit to the period between 1953 (the publication year of Casino Royale, the first James Bond novel) and 1967 (the year that Emma Peel – Diana Rigg, in real life – left the Avengers).

It was a time when a great number of interesting characters (fictional and otherwise) were having more adventures over more of the globe with more dash and élan than at any time before. And maybe since, especially as concerns the dash and élan.
