Dispatch 002

Another one. Well, that’s a bit of a surprise already.  Hope you have been doing well over the intervening couple days. The last week has given a whole new meeting to the concept of ‘unseasonably warm’ here at the Bungalow in Saint Petersburg.  One hopes that this will just be some practical joke of the climate, followed by the coolest summer on record, but one also knows that that idea is pure bunk.

My personal method for dealing with the unbearable heat is to meet it head on and try to trick myself through a form of self hypnosis (for lack of a better term) into thinking that I actually love the sweltering heat.  Admittedly some years I am more successful at doing this than others, but overall it works pretty well.

Stumbled upon a good podcast this week dealing with all aspects of spy and espionage related media. It’s called Spybrary. The title leaves a bit to be desired, mainly because it is a little hard to say, but it is quite good. The production quality is not at the same professional level as many these days, but I find that somewhat endearing.  Lots of Bond and Le Carre and even a little Modesty Blaise, though not enough, and also a wide field of other stuff, fiction and nonfiction, all from an ensemble of jolly enthusiasts.

From this podcast I heard about a BBC production from the late 70s called The Sandbaggers. Very good IF (and that is a truly big IF) you dig the politics and admin that go on behind the scenes of spy and special ops stuff.  Almost no action, but there are a bunch of meetings between annoyed civil servants. Great! – Should probably clarify. That was a legit ‘Great!’  It is an excellent show.  Like many shows of the time the exterior scenes were shot on film with interior scenes on videotape. This can be a little off-putting, but it does not get in the way too much.  Less so now that so many folks are shooting at 60 frames per second.

Listening to Koop Kooper’s Cocktail Nation as I write this.  A show from 10/22 called ‘Tiki Party Time With The Tiki Delights.  Pretty good.  Fitting for the early summer we are getting.  That being said, the Delights are no Tikiyaki Orchestra, but then again who is.

A bunch of photos of lizards this week.  Lizards are the prairie dogs of Florida.  Very tiny alligators.  I like them, always have.  Some of the photos are on Instagram under Corsairs Trading Co.

Was looking through the new Atomic Ranch magazine this morning.  Saw an image from that cheeky artist Shag that I have not seen before.  Don’t know if it is new, but it was new to me.  Something about it reminded me of the beautifully rendered elevations of the Playboy Townhouse from 1962. I’ll try to link out to both.

Have a good week.  More soon.

Was wondering if the comments feature is working. Looks like it is.
